Basic Tools and Equipment for the DIY Painter

11 November 2022

If you are planning to do some painting around your home, you will have to arm yourself with a range of basic tools and equipment to ensure that you get the job done right.

Here’s a rundown of the basic tools you’re going to need.

Tools for Prepping

Before you can even consider getting out the paint and roller, you must prep the surface you will be painting. You want to ensure that you have a nice clean and smooth surface for the new paint to cling to. Otherwise, all your efforts will be wasted when the new paint cracks and peels off.

At the very least, you’re going to need a paint scraper in order to remove as much of the old paint as possible. This is particularly important if the paint is cracked and peeling. It’s also a good idea to give the surface that you’re going to paint a light sanding. For this, you can either use a hand sander or perhaps, a radial sander for larger areas.

Basic Tools for Painting

Once the area is fully prepped and you’ve decided on a paint colour, it’s time to arm yourself with the painting tools that will make the job easier. For large areas such as walls and ceilings, you’ll need a paint roller and a roller frame.

It’s a good idea to get a selection of different rollers if you’re going to be using different colours of paint in different areas. Of course, you’ll also need a roller tray for the paint. Alternatively, you can buy a roller kit that includes a roller frame, one paint roller, and a tray. It’s also a good idea to get some disposable tray liners to make clean-up easier.

Tools to Make Your Job Easier

For painting walls and ceilings, you really need an extension pole that you can attach to your paint roller frame. Many of these poles are telescopic so that you can control how far you want to extend them.

This is particularly useful if you have high ceilings in some rooms of your home because you’ll only need one pole to do the whole house.

A straight edge can also be very useful if you want to get a precise finish when it comes to painting around skirting boards, cornices, and window frames.

A Good Selection of Brushes

No painting kit is complete without a good selection of different-sized brushes. You’ll need these for painting the trims and getting into tight spaces such as corners. You can either purchase individual brushes in different widths or just get a set that contains a range of different sizes.

In Summary

If you’re planning to complete a DIY painting project in your home, it’s important to arm yourself with the basic tools and equipment to ensure that you can get the job done easily and efficiently.

Having the right set of tools will make your job easier and you’ll have a freshly painted home in no time.
