GETTING READY FOR SPRING: MUST HAVE TOOLS FOR YOUR GARDEN SHED

27 October 2022

Spring is finally here and the garden is beckoning you to go outside and tend to all those jobs that you may have neglected over winter. This is also the perfect time to take stock of the tools that you have in your garden shed.

While you might already have a selection of garden tools, some may need replacing and there may be others that you haven’t already got but that you’ll find useful as you tend to your garden.

Here are some of the more important must-have tools that need to be in your garden shed.

1. CUTTING AND PRUNING SHEARS

To carry out the necessary maintenance tasks around your garden, you’ll need a good selection of cutting and pruning shears. These should include:

  • A good quality pair of sharp secateurs such as these Spear & Jackson Bypass Pruners.
  • Long-handled loppers for larger and higher-up branches. You might find that a ratchet lopper with a telescopic handle will make this easier.
  • A pruning saw or bow saw to trim large branches on trees.

2. LAWN TOOLS

To keep your lawn looking great all summer, there are a variety of tools that you should consider apart from your lawn mower. It’s also a good idea to give your mower a service and replace the blades if these have become a little dull.

Here are some essential lawn tools that you should consider:

Draper Tools 2 in 1 Lawn Aerator and Scarifier

If your lawn has been neglected over winter and has a build-up of thatch, a scarifier is an essential tool to break up the dense thatch so that water and fertiliser can penetrate the grass and get into the soil.

If you scarify and aerate your lawn on an annual basis, you’ll find that it will perform far better and you’ll end up with lots of lush, green grass to enjoy all summer long.

Draper Tools Rolling Lawn Aerator

If you only have a small lawn area, you can aerate the lawn manually with this hand-powered lawn aerator. It might use a little more effort but you’ll still end up with excellent results.

Draper Heritage Stainless Steel Lawn Edger

To finish off that beautifully mown lawn, you’ll need a lawn edger so that you can create a perfectly manicured edge between your lawn and your driveway.

3. DIGGING AND CULTIVATING TOOLS

If you plan to grow your own vegetables or you want to create a couple of new flower beds, you’re going to need a good selection of digging and cultivating tools. These should include:

  • A quality square-headed spade so that you can dig out your garden bed with precise edges. This is also a must-have tool for creating planting holes for large trees and shrubs.
  • A heavy-duty four-pronged garden fork for breaking up the soil for garden beds.
  • Selection of small hand tools such as a trowel, hand cultivator, a specialised weeding tool, and a garden dibber for making small planting holes for seedlings.

IN SUMMARY

As you prepare for some work in the garden over the warmer months, you should have a quick look in your garden shed to ensure that you have all the essential tools to make your gardening both easy and enjoyable.
